Hello! We’re David and Hatty Fawcett and we’re moving from London to Swanage, Dorset in early November 2014, together with our daughter Lily.
Hatty is a Londoner (born and bred) and David, although originally from “The North”, has lived in London longer than he has lived anywhere else. We both love London but have realised that, since having Lily, we’re not using it in the same way as we used to. We both run our own businesses (from home) and don’t commute any more (a good thing!). However, nor do we really go out “in town” much any more. (A symptom of having a young child).
The decision to move was driven largely by what we hope to offer Lily. She loves being outside and the outdoor life she can experience in Swanage seems more appealing than that which London can offer. As a family we’re hoping to slow the pace a little bit (but we’re not talking about becoming beach bums, you understand), and to have more time for an active, outside lifestyle away from our computer screens. Hatty is also a keen (but not very talented) sailor and hopes to get better “on the water” and David plans to make more time for his composing.
We’re not ones to shy away from change and we’re excited by the prospect of building a new life by the sea. Needless to say we are nervous too. Most of our friends and Hatty’s family are in London. We’ve also been very involved in our local community in various ways (particularly through music) so we are leaving a lot of happy memories behind. Our departure is definitely tinged with sadness.
Many of our friends have said “We thought about moving out but didn’t quite have the courage to do it” and that’s where the inspiration for this blog comes from. We don’t really know if we will love or hate our new life (although we’re willing to have a good guess!) and we hope that by sharing our experience as it happens (warts and all) we might inspire others to take the plunge, whilst also keeping ourselves on track with what we say we want to achieve by moving.
We’d love it if you’d like to follow our story as it unfolds, either through this blog or on Twitter (@LifeBeyondLDN).
Let’s see what unfolds…
